Amanda Bossard, fresh out from Anchorage High School in 1992 began her studies in marine biology. Bossard began her career in the industry of commercial seafood in 1999. At the time she worked as a fisherman on Murat Aritan's 65 foot halibut vessel, later transformed into a fishing tender. Bossard and Aritan are married now and have come together in claiming their share of their industry. They both believe in conservation and maximizing the use of natural resources that are used in the seafood industry. Otolith is a direct wholesale seafood distributor which was founded in Philadelphia in 2007, by a mother of two kids, Bella age 3 and Andre age 1. Otolith's name is a loving memory of Bossard's deep understanding of the biology of fish and her husband's many connections in the industry of seafood. The two are frequently separated for up to 5 months at a stretch while they work towards sustainable and financial goals that show their determination and independence wherever they live. Bossard as well as Isabella and Andre (ages 10 and 12 respectively) are back each year, from July to August and continue to Southeast Alaska for the summer catch of wild salmon. They use hooks and line to capture their salmon and then join Aritan to market their products to local processors for a period of two months. After that, they increase their direct seafood sale through Otolith Sustainable Seafood.
